Computex Plays to a Full House     | 英文作品

By Fred Jame, Special to eWEEK

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- High booth demand has forced the Computex Taipei 2002 exhibition to be separated into three halls. Both vendors and buyers see that as a sign of not only an increasing warming of global IT business but also that the next wave of profitable technology advances is near.

At the show, Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. both unveiled new generations of processors. Intel demonstrated the new 845 series chip set as well as a sample 3GHz Pentium 4 architecture in motherboard maker Asus' booth.

According to Intel Vice President Michael Splinter, one of the event's keynote speakers, the fastest shipping combination is the 2.53MHz Pentium 4 processor with Extreme Graphics' functions and a 533MHz front-side bus. Many Taiwanese motherboard makers, such as Gigatech, Asustek, MSI and Aopen Inc., are using this architecture on newly announced boards.

By Fred Jame, Special to eWEEK.com

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Computex Taipei 2002, one of the world's three largest computer shows in parallel with Hannover CeBIT and Comdex Fall, is open to the slowly recovering world economy this week at the Taipei World Trade Center here.

In 2,306 booths, more than 1,108 exhibitors are showcasing their best efforts after the tumultuous 2001. More than 23,000 attendees are expected to attend and to gawk at what vendors from Taiwan and 17 other countries have to offer.

Though typically known as a hardware and gadget show, this year's Computex has gone wireless. Wireless solutions and products for new mobile phones, PDAs, notebooks, tablet PCs, and input devices are everywhere, with wireless technologies being cleverly mixed and implemented.

Komodo Server: A compliment to Apple's G4 Cube     | 英文作品

By Fred Jame, Special to eWEEK.com

"Imitation is the best compliment" may be true in many other cases, but Steve Hung, the Marketing Manager of Taiwan's D.A. Computing Technology, thinks this statement is an overkill to the company's Komodo Server.

A few days ago in the Comdex Fall 2000, D.A. Computing brought as much wows as Apple Computer's Power Mac G4 Cube with its Komodo Server, an Intel-based server with a cubic case in an plexiglass enclosure.

I hate e-commerce!     | 英文作品

Because I hate to let people I don't know to know my buying habit; I don't like to buy the things I haven't seen for myself; I don't like to buy stuff I haven't put my hands on; I don't like to buy from a machine (vending machine aside); I don't like to share the pleasure of bringing new toys home. And at last, I don't like to give my credit card number to someone I can't see his face or live on the other side of earth.

Do you buy from the Web?

Do I buy from the Web? Of course. As an active "information guy", I use all kinds of gadgets that appeared on "eMono", and I obtain information from all over the world. Some of resource are free, but some indeed deserve my hard-earned money.

E-Book: A Palm-Reading Perspective     | 英文作品

Recently, book publisher Simon and Schuster cooperates with many online booksellers to publish Stephen King's new 66-page "book" -- "Riding the Bullet" exclusively on the web in many digital formats for readers to download. The event itself was an instant success. Many servers that provides the software for reading the e-book has been jammed, and the download section of the online bookstores were forced to be closed due to system overload.

What is "book in digital format"? Or as some people call it, "electronic book" or just "e-book"? E-books are book contents made into electronic files that can be read on computers, PDAs (personal digital assistants), or dedicated reading devices. In order for readers to adopt easily, most e-books mimic the look and feel of paper books; but recent e-books can display layouts that incorporate text and graphic, and even let readers put bookmarks, hand written notes, and highlight marks in the pages.

Apple Taiwan weathers adversity     | 英文作品

Taipei, Taiwan -- Marketing is a combination of human and material resources; take either of these factors out of the mix, and the result can most charitably be referred to as "sales efforts." In 1999, Apple's Taiwanese marketing resources came up short for a number of reasons; nevertheless, Apple Taiwan actually did a good job of maximizing those resources to promote its year-end bonanza of translucent hardware.

Some of 1999's pitfalls and challenges were unique to Taiwan: Earthquakes, late delivery, price slashing and resource restrictions all affected the company's performance here.

A table for two

Since Apple only offered a nominal presence at Macworld Expo Taipei 1999, the Macworld Expo Taipei 2000 will be combined with the Taipei Printing Publishing World show under the theme "Publishing and Digital Technology," according to IDG Expos.

FileMaker axes Chinese, Korean versions     | 英文作品

Taipei, Taiwan -- When it rolled out FileMaker Pro 5.0 in late September, FileMaker Inc. formally announced that it will no longer produce the Chinese or Korean version of its flagship database application.

Steve McManus, general manager of Santa Clara, Calif.-based FileMaker's Asia Pacific operation, explained that sales have been poor since the introduction of Chinese FileMaker Pro 4.0 at Macworld Expo/Taiwan in May 1998. Although Chinese FileMaker Pro enjoys a core of loyal users who consider it superior to its competitors in terms of ease of use and practicality, FileMaker has decided that continued production of the Chinese version of the database package isn't economically viable.
